Cerner Education

Advancing Cerner Education

We've produced a series of videos to help bring you up to speed with how to use Cerner at Chelsea ICU.

If you've used Cerner before then a lot of these concepts might be familiar. However, we generally find that we've set up more features than other departments so things might be different to what you've done before.

It can feel a little overwhelming at the start but once you're familiar with the setup, it's a much faster way to use Cerner.

Below is a list of video guides to help you get up to speed:

  An Overview

How to write a Daily Review

This video shows you our process for writing a daily review or ward round entry. It's also a great overview of how we set up Cerner to make our team more efficient.

You'll need to complete the setup steps below to ensure your view of Cerner looks the same as shown on screen. However, it's a great start to get an understanding of our process for using Cerner.

  Setup Videos

These instructional videos will walk you through the setup process for Cerner in the ICU. By following these steps just once, you can configure Cerner to optimise your workflow, making it easy to find information and enabling you to work more efficiently.

Patient Lists

You're probably used to having a list of patients based on a location (such as a ward). We do the same but need to set on up to include the AICU and Burns ICU beds.

You can use the same process for other wards too.

Critical Care Worklist

If you're used to creating printed 'lists' for handover then the Critical Care Worklist will look familiar. However, we've created a view that will autopopulate with information and allows you to have an electronic jobs list.

It's fully customisable but we've found this setup works for most people.

We've designed this to make handover easier and also to provide a useful view for printed lists - although some people find that with the Critical Care Worklist setup, they don't need to keep a paper list!

MyExperience

This is the 'landing page' when you open Cerner. We have it set up to open the Critical Care Worklist directly.

While you're here we should also setup your MPages so you have access to all the views needed in ICU.

Daily Review tab

While you can jump around between sections of Cerner, the fastest way to view information and write notes is within the ICU Daily Review tab. Within this view you have access to Obs, the drugs chart, blood results and previous documents. You can also use it to records jobs on the jobs list and order medication or investigations.

It's a really powerful tool to make you more efficient and save time so it's worth setting up correctly. Again, you can customise this to your preferences but these settings suit most people.

Obs and Assessments

This section of Cerner allows you to see a detailed and comprehensive view of much of the information related to a patient. However, it can be a lot of information to take in!

To make things easier, we've set up some views for ICU that contain the most relevant information. This short video helps you to set them as visible. We'll make reference to sections included here in later videos.

  Recording information

Lines and Devices

You need to record any line or device inserted in a patient. This is for a number of reasons:

This video walks you through the process.

Problems and Diagnoses

We're really keen to avoid you having to duplicate work. One example is having to copy a list of presenting complaints, current problems and past medical history every time you write a review.

Instead we can add Problems (presenting compaints/current issues) and Diagnoses (past medical history) to a patient's record. Once it's been added once it will appear on our Critical Care Worklist and also within any review you write using the ICU template.

Renal Replacement Therapy

Renal Replacement Therapy can be complication. However, we've put together a careset to make things easier for you. This covers prescribing fluids and also how to input settings for RRT.

We suggest that RRT settings be reviewed on your ward round and this video will show you how to do that.

Tips to make you more efficient

Favourite Orders

If you find yourself prescribing something frequently then it's helpful to save it as a favourite so you can order it more quickly. We've put together some 'care sets' that cover the majority of medication needed in ICU but most people also create their own list of favourite drugs.

   Did you know...

You can also create a list of favourite Problems and Diagnoses

AutoText Copy Utility

AutoTexts are like favourites for free text. We have a repository of different autotexts that you can copy but you can copy any autotext from someone else using this helpful tool.

Multi-Patient Task List

Setting up the MPTL is somewhat complex and requires an understanding of the workflow. Please see the dedicated MPTL page for more info.
